Hymns

In Thy Name, O Lord, Assembling

For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. (Psalm 33:21)

Hymn Text

1. In Thy name, O Lord, assembling,
      We, Thy people, now draw near;
Teach us to rejoice with trembling,
      Speak, and let Thy servants hear;
           Hear with meekness,
           Hear with meekness,
      Hear Thy Word with godly fear.

2. Grant us, Lord, some gracious token
      Of Thy love before we part;
Crown Thy Word, which will be spoken,
      Life and peace to each impart,
           And all blessings,
           And all blessings
      Which will sanctify the heart.

3. While our days on earth are lengthened,
      May we give them, Lord, to Thee;
Cheered by hope and daily strengthened,
      May we run, nor weary be,
           Till Thy glory,
           Till Thy glory
      Without cloud in heaven we see.

4. There, in worship, purer, sweeter,
      Thee Thy people shall adore,
Tasting of enjoyment greater,
      Far than thought conceived before;
           Full enjoyment,
           Full enjoyment,
      Full, unmixed and evermore.

Commentary

The words to this hymn by Thomas Kelly (1769–1855) are from a collection of hymns published by William Gadsby in 1838. It is a prayer voiced to God and a call to worship that rejoices in the gathering of the church. In the verse first we ask God to draw near our assembly and help us hear His Word with both godly fear and joy. In the second verse we ask God to be at work in our midst, quickening and sanctifying the hearts of those assembled. In the third verse we commit ourselves to serving God with our aim toward seeing the earth filled with His glory. In the final verse we are transported to heaven as we anticipate the "full enjoyment" of worshipping Him before His throne through eternity.

The tune was composed by Tom Wells who serves as director of the Heritage Chorale at Heritage Baptist Church in Mansfield, Texas.
